“I just want a nice little paver patio and simple pathway to get to the pool. And get rid of the grass, so my dog doesn’t track mud into the house!” That was the direction provided by the owner of this charming Craftsman bungalow.
However, at our initial on-site meeting, I immediately felt there was so much more we could do with this space. And through conversation with the client, I was able to draw out the intangibles of how he wanted to feel in this space, gaining an understanding of the kind of experiences he imagined could be enjoyed in it.
The final design includes a full kitchen with BBQ and fridge, Cumaru hardwood deck sitting area, gas fire pit, lush Zen Garden with a stone fountain, and dramatic lighting throughout the yard. The result is a warm, inviting outdoor space that feels cozy and comfortable while defining four distinct and functional ‘rooms’ to enjoy. The client has shared that he spends nearly every night outside cooking and relaxing in his new outdoor living room, while his dog can now play outside without tracking annoying mud into the house.
